Do you have acting, filming, or video production skills? Do you want to be excused from 6th period to act in, produce, film or edit videos that will help JMS kick off the 2018-2019 school year? 8th grade softball practice will start on Monday, May 14 at 4:15 pm at the softball field. Please check your email to complete some information prior to the first day. Volunteers are needed again this summer for Safety Town! Safety Town is a program sponsored by Johnston Community Education that teaches safety awareness to children that will be entering kindergarten next year. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information about Safety Town, please stop by the front office and pick up a volunteer form!
9th Graders interested in serving on the JHS Student Council next year will need to pick up an application in the JMS Front Office. All applications need to be typed and returned to the JMS office by the end of the day on May 11.
Reminder: If you are 8th grade boy interested in going out for basketball next year, please get your summer basketball information sheet returned to Coach Harken or Coach Sciurba ASAP. They are due by May 11th. More information will be passed along to those that are interested!
The Johnston Women’s Golf Team competed in a Varsity Meet on 5/3 at Elmwood against Marshalltown. The Dragons won the duel meet. Low golfer for the Dragons was Senior Abbie Gault. @JCSD_Golf #rolldrags
The Johnston Women’s Golf Team competed in the Valley Invitational on 5/2 at Willow Creek against other Iowa schools. The Dragons placed 5th. Low golfer for the Dragons was Senior Abbie Gault.
The Dragons JV/JJV team also competed in a duel against Waukee on 5/2 at Jester. The Dragons placed 2nd. Low golfer for the Dragons was Hannah Daley.
On April 30th 12 JMS students competed at the State History Day contest in Des Moines. The students have been working all semester on their projects and their hard work paid off in a great showing at the state contest. Congratulations to the students who competed and received the following awards:

9th Grade Vocal Music Students:
We had 60 entries where 9th graders performed solos, duets, trios, or quartets on Monday April 9th. Students were judged by area judges including Matt Huth and Lisa Kelsey. They were scored on their tone quality, intonation, rhythm/tempo, diction, interpretation, musicianship, and performance skills. JMS students earned
1 I+ rating (Perfect) 43 I-ratings (Superior) 13 II – ratings (Excellent) and 1 Honorable Mentioned

Congratulations to the High School and Middle School Science Olympiad Teams for their success at the State Competition this past weekend. 5 High School teams and 4 Middle Schools teams each made up of 15 students competed in 23 events with topics from all across the science and engineering fields. Johnston brings more teams than any other school in the state. High School teams brought home top 3 finishes in 17 of the 23 events and had a team place 3rd overall. Shout out to our all 9th grade team competing at the High School level against seniors, and placed first in an event and placed higher than 4 other teams. Middle School teams brought home medals in 9 of the 23 events and the highest placing team placed 4th in the State with all other teams placing in the top half. Students have been practicing after school since November, and their hard work has certainly paid off.

GOLDEN APPLE AWARD – WHO-TV 13 in Des Moines is looking for nomination to award an outstanding teacher with “The Golden Apple.” This is WHO’s 23rd year…every month of the school year…finding an extraordinary teacher, telling viewers about his/her story and sharing the good work going on in that school.
