Michael Schmitz is a senior at Johnston High School and is a shining example of what a student of the month encompasses.
Schmitz participates in cross country, swimming and track at Johnston High School, and has just won a scholarship, the 2019 Iowa High School Athletic Director Association District Scholarship.
In order to qualify for the scholarship, the student must have a GPA of a B+ or higher, score at least a 24 on the ACT, be ranked in the top 25 percent of their class academically and have participated in two sports for at least two years.
Schmitz told the Johnston Times that the scholarship would help him get through college for a degree in the sciences.
He plans "to use the money to help with college expenses," Schmitz said. "[My] major is still undecided but I am considering engineering or computer science."
He will receive the scholarship in March at the Iowa High School Athletic Director Association's annual convention for his hard work in athletics and in the classroom.
"Team sports have helped [me] to balance school and sports, be a part of a team and learn life skills including time management, communication and effort," Schmitz said.
When asked about his future plans, Schmitz said: "I am undecided at this time but he is considering the STEM field."
