A former Sioux Falls, South Dakota patrol officer is the newest member of the Johnston Police Department.
Andrew Curry was sworn in May 20 by Mayor Paula Dierenfeld at the Johnston City Council regular meeting. A video of the swearing-in ceremony is available on Facebook.
Curry, a police officer since 2016, moved to Iowa to be closer to his family, is especially interested in community policing, according to the Facebook post, and hopes to become involved in municipal problem solving. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Morningside College, a liberal arts college in Sioux City operated by the Methodist Church.
Curry’s interest in community policing matches the police department’s stated and demonstrated commitment to serving the community, which in the most recent poll available ranked the department 20 percent higher than the national average, according to the department’s website. The department operates from a state-of-the-art building it moved to five years ago and adopted a body-cam program to improve accountability and police-civilian relationships in 2015.
