Iowa Department of Education issued the following announcement on Jan. 13.
Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise dropped by Griswold to see the district's work first hand. From left are Teacher Holly Esbeck and student Shelby Steffen with Director Wise. In front of them is the communication technology they acquired through their STEM BEST funding.
Breaking from the norm and trying something new in the classroom can be intimidating, but going into it flanked with strong supports can make all the difference. Holly Esbeck, Sandra Nelson and Judy Griffin have combined their efforts and are making changes in Griswold.
Holly teaches English and has used several projects from the clearinghouse in her communication arts classroom. She has been supported by her instructional coach, Sandra Nelson, as well as Judy Griffin, their local consultant with Green Hills AEA.
Judy has planted the seed with local organization leaders and business owners to get them thinking about working with students to tackle projects that they don't have the time or skill set to address themselves. The public library, a radio station and two local historical sites have all placed projects on the clearinghouse, and Holly and Sandra have eagerly snapped up those opportunities for their communication arts students.
The communication arts students are working with a local radio station to begin livestreaming high school athletic events. They are also creating marketing and educational resources for the public library and a local historical nonprofit.
Griswold was also awarded a STEM BEST partnership in 2019 which will provide for resources and allow the expansion of these efforts. When it comes to work-based learning, there are many options and many parties interested in engaging in it (on both the school and employer sides) and in supporting it. In Griswold, they are showing how to gather the right pieces together and fit them into a successful plan.
